Memorial Lecture
On the 19th of January 2007, the second Chanaka Amaratunga Memorial Lecture was held in Colombo. Dr. Amaratunga had an international reputation as a liberal personality and an erudite speaker on liberalism.
He was also the founder of the Liberal Party of Sri Lanka. The Lecture was delivered by Mr. Warwick Lightfoot, former Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, U.K. The Lecture was on the subject of “the British Model of Devolution and Local Government”.
The lecture also provided an opportunity for the participants of the YLDA (Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia) international workshop to listen to a learned speaker. The Speaker elaborated the salient features of Local Government in the three key “principality” of the British Isles, Scotland, and Wales & Northern Ireland. He also pointed out certain feature unique to the states and others that are common to all.
Attention of the audience was also drawn to the fact that Dr. Chanaka Amaratunga, being the true liberal, tried his best never to compromise on the high standards of fundamental freedom and human rights.
