Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit - Project for Economic Education (PEE) [Druckversion]
Project for Economic Education (PEE)
The project for Economic Education (PEE) was set up in 1985 by the Late Mr. Minoo Masani, as a joint project of the Economics Research Centre (ERC) and the Leslie Sawhney Programme (LSP).
One of the objectives of the Project is to promote the economic reform process and to make it both understood and accepted by the people. In 1990 the Project for Economic Education was responsible to revive the earstwhile Indian Liberal Group (ILG) (www.liberalsindia.com). The ILG works for the re-emergence of a broad-based liberal party, which can play a principled role in the emerging politics of coalition.
The Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation is in close cooperation with both PEE and the ILG.
Mr. Minoo Masani whose initiative PEE was created, was its Chairman from 1985 to May 1998. The present Chairman is Mr. S.V. Raju was an associate of Mr. Masani in the Liberal Movement for almost four decades, including 14 years as the Executive Secretary of the Swatantra Party.
Objectives
The two sponsoring organisations aim to educate the public on the economic reforms process set in motion in the mid 80s and on the principles of market economy. The Project for Economic Education continues to believe that economic growth requires a secular and liberal environment based on the rule of law, and therefore, considers its task of promoting liberalism and liberal values all the more important alongside the task of economic education.
Activities in cooperation with Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation
The PEE has just published "The Liberal Budget" to provide a ‘template’ or ‘benchmark’ budget from the liberal perspective. Similarly, the PEE plans similar ‘benchmarks’ in other areas of the governance including education, the administration of justice etc.
PEE continues the task of promoting a greater awareness of liberalism and liberal values as also influence public opinion on the need to continue with, and accelerate the economic reforms process. The Project has held a large number of workshops and seminars and published a number of booklets on subjects relating to the economy in general and to the economic reforms in India in particular. The Project believes that economic policy cannot be viewed in isolation.
Indian Democracy is passing through a critical phase. For the first forty years, it was single party domination. This has now given way to coalition politics; the two national parties the INC and the BJP leading to opposing coalitions comprising of state and regional parties. In this context the absence of a liberal party is noticeable. The Liberals must play an important role in the emerging political scene. Conscious of this, the ILG will be hard at work pushing for the re-emergence of a broad-based liberal party, which can play a principled role in the emerging politics of coalition.
