COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (CDF)
Cooperative Development Foundation is an old and loyal partner of the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation. Their work over the decades has been remarkable too. Through their hard work in nine States a parallel and alternative law has been introduced, which is simpler and easier for the ordinary person. By and large exempt from the discretionary powers of the Government, these laws have proved to be a remarkable encouragement to thousands of people.
COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (CDF)
Some 23.000 cooperatives have been registered over the years. Unfortunately in Bihar, Jharkhand and Karnataka, the State interference is still far more than the people would wish for and efforts are on, both to further simplify the law and to make both government officials and the ordinary people aware of the intricacies of setting up cooperatives. Indeed experience has shown that the less Government interference, the happier the experience for the ordinary citizens. The impact of these cooperatives has been fundamental. Women’s self-perception for instance has changed dramatically, where they have joined a cooperative and suddenly instead of seeing themselves as needy they see themselves as earners and investors contributing to the prosperity of the family.
Cooperative Development Foundation, formerly known as Samakya, works for the promotion of an environment in which cooperatives flourish as decentralised, democratic, self-help and mutual aid organisations, effectively harnessing and fostering local resources, in consonance with the principles of cooperation.
CDF believes that the cooperative form of organisation, when successful, results in increased income and savings for larger numbers of families and therefore, in increased purchasing power and employment opportunities for them and others. Even more important, CDF believes that cooperatives promote choice, accountability, plurality, democracy, ingredients essential to sustainable development.
